Weligama is a town in Matara District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka, governed by an Urban Council. The term Weligama literally means "sandy village" which refers to the area's sandy sweep bay. Tourism & Fishing are two main businesses.

Weligama, located 145km from Colombo is a well-known tourist destination renowned for its sandy beaches. Famous for its stilt-fishermen(Traditional Fisherman) balanced on a cross bar of a single pole planted into the sea bed, this attraction has been captured in every corner of the world depicting Sri Lanka as a preferred destination of choice for visitors from all over the world.

There could be some truth in the above stories as Weligama was highly prosperous city in the ancient times and a center of foreign trade as Weligama was used as a harbor by foreign trading ships.

the largest of which has been carved with a 4m high figure known as the Kusta Rajah or 'Leper King' Both hands are raised; the right hand in Buddhist vitarka mudra or instructional gesture. In addition the elaborate hair of the figure is decorated with medallions depicting samadhi or meditating Buddhas.

He is good at healing for people. People believed,he has some kind of healing power to cure illness. The folklore about this statue relates to a healing of a king.
