Tissamaharama is located 264 km south of Colombo in the district of Habanthota. Tissamaharama is a ancient town in south-eastern Sri Lanka. It was the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Ruhuna as early as the 3rd century B.C. Only a small amount of buildings from that period can still be seen today.

The town is extremely pleasantly set amidst the diffuse paddy fields swaying with the breeze from prodigious Tissa Wewa rainwater reservoir, 1 km north of the city. In the center of the paddy fields stands the impressive Snowy-white Santagiri stupa, 56m in height and 165 meters in circumference.

Also located in Tissamaharama is Menik dagoba stupa and the famous Yatala dagoba stupa believed to contain the relics of Buddha.Tissa Wewa with its amazing bird life provides the scenic background to the town. Tissa was the sanctuary in the Down South.

Mahagama was founded in the third century BC by a brother of the King Devanam Piya Tissa of Anuradhapura, and later reign under the King Kavantissa, father of the hero of the nation, King Dutugamunu of Ruhuna.
