This water fall is located at the base of the "Seven virgins" mountain range. The birth of this water fall is the Maskeli River, main tributary of the Kelani River. The river leaped off from a cliff of 126m to form this beauty. Though the reservoirs built upstream are decreased the yield of the water flow significantly, the fall is still young & attractive.

The fall got it's name because of late Eng. D.J. Wimalasurendra(1874-1953), known as the father of Hydro power electricity in Sri Lanaka. As per his project proposal submitted in 1918, the water potential, combined with Maskelioya and Kehelgamuoya, could be diverted to generate electricity to light 100,000 lamps ("Laksa-pahana" -> "Laxapana"). The waterfall at Laxapana is observed in a distance by many pilgrims of Sri Pada (Adams Peak) who use the route to Nallathanni via Norton Bridge & Maskeliya. But only a few out of them really visited the base & the mouth of the fall, which could be accessed with a little extra effort

Routes :

Colombo → Kitulgala → Kalugala junction → Laxapana → Koththellena -> stepped path for a distance of 350m Colombo → Nortonbridge → Maskeliya rd.(B328) → at 5th Km post the fall can be viewed in distance

Road condition :

Can be managed by a van.

Special Notes :

The base pool is deadly deep and not safe even reach the edge of the same.

The fall can be accessed by the both base & the head/mouth .If you visit the mouth of waterfall, beware on sudden incensement of water level (due to the reservoirs located up stream) and soft & slippery rock surfaces

Be extra careful on bathing in unknown places. Please keep in your mind that death is in your hand span while you are bathing in the Maskeliya oya.
